MJS.ART - The PencilBrush

Matthew had an idea for a paint brush but with pencil lead instead of bristles so he could “paint” with pencil lead. He wasn't trying to paint with the pencil lead as paint; he wanted to draw the pencil lines with the fluidity of a brush while maintaining the actual lines.

Taping pencils together didn't work because the lines were too far apart. Taping the individual leads together was cumbersome and difficult to manage. So Matthew decided to build what he wanted: The PencilBrush.

The PencilBrush has 23 pencil leads. Why 23? That's just how it worked out. The lead is held in place by a 3D-printed rubber tray (see below) to ensure it stays organized and has some cushioning when the cap is tightened down. The tray also makes it easy to adjust the lead up or down or remove some to create different patterns.

The PencilBrush lead tray is under constant development, iteration, and improvement. If the tray that comes with your PencilBrush is different that the one in the photo, that's because it's better than the old(er) one.

The PencilBrush is made from wood, by hand, one-at-a-time. The design is constantly evolving as user feedback guides its development.

The PencilBrush comes in a handmade box with two lead trays, and a lead sharpener. An initial set of 23 HB pencil leads (actually graphite) is also included. The PencilBrush is compatible with any 2mm pencil graphite, so you can use your preferred lead and/or hardness rating. There are no options (yet) to customize the brush options.
